Group 1: Shields Camp (BLM) (SOLD OUT)

On the middle of the San Juan Ridge, this is an upper foothill area. There are mature forests of Madrone, Black Oak, Blue Oak, Manzanita, Douglas-Fir, and Pine. There is a creek to explore. The big Madrone grove is a great place to practice collecting. Edible varieties found here in the past: Queen Bolete, Chanterelle, Honey Mushroom, and Butter Boletus

Group 2: Big Parcel (BLM) (SOLD OUT)

This is the closest site to the Shady Creek Center, which means more time exploring the woods. There are early mature forests of Madrone, Black Oak, Douglas-Fir, and Pine to explore. Edible varieties found here in the past: Queen Bolete, Matsutake, Lions Mane, Honey Mushroom, and Blewits.

Group 3: Upper Grizzly Creek/Bear Trap (USFS) – ON HOLD

Above North Columbia, this is one of our higher elevation regular sites. There are mature forests of Madrone, Black Oak, Douglas-Fir, and Pine, and a creek to explore. Look for bumps in the conifer duff. Attention: Please do not disturb rare fungi species known to occur here. Edible varieties found here in the past: Chanterelle, Lions Mane, and Shrimp Russula. PLEASE NOTE: Good driving abilities needed, 4WD recommended.

Group 4: Hornswoggle Campground (USFS) (SOLD OUT)

This is the longest drive from the camp but has the most (maybe best) areas to explore within the Tanoak woodlands of the Bullards Bar area. There is some recreational picking activity (competition) and so one has to walk a bit out of the campground to find undisturbed mushroom areas. Be aware of rare fungi found here and please do not pick them. Edible varieties found here in the past: Lions Mane, Hedgehog, Matsutake, Queen Bolete, and White Chanterelle. PLEASE NOTE: Advanced/experienced mushroom hunters only due to technical terrain.

Group 5: Rebel Ridge Trailhead (USFS) (SOLD OUT)

Part of the unique Tanoak-Madrone complex  surrounding the Bullards Bar area, with a nice Madrone ridge to explore. There are some steep hills. Try getting off trail to see undisturbed fungi.  Please do not disturb rare fungi. Edible varieties found here in the past: Lions Mane, Hedgehog, Matsutake, Queen Bolete. HIKING DIFFICULTY: Medium to hard.

Group 6: Dark Day (USFS) (SOLD OUT)

This is a longer drive from the camp but it is part of the unique Tanoak and Madrone ecosystem in the Bullards Bar area. There are some steep hills. Try getting off trail to see undisturbed fungi. Edible varieties found here in the past: Lions Mane, Hedgehog, Matsutake, and Queen Bolete. Please do not disturb rare fungi species known to occur here.

Group 7: Shady Creek Center (SOLD OUT)

You don’t have to drive anymore! Shady Creek Center has approx. 120 acres of trails. There are mature forests of Madrone, Live Oak, Blue Oak, Manzanita, and Pine. It is our lowest elevation site which represents a different ecosystem of foothill oak woodland and chaparral. There is a creek to explore. Edible varieties found here in the past: Honey Mushroom, Oyster Mushrooms, Queen Boletus, and Butter Boletus.

See you at the Foray! Happy mushroom hunting!
